This study created a model comparing states with mandated public face mask use versus states without a mandate. It found that SARS-CoV-2 infection transmission was decreased by the mandates.

Comment: There is some controversy regarding face mask use, but this study suggests a net benefit in terms of disease transmission to governmental mandates requiring use. Note, however, that it did not look at clinical outcomes but only at rate of growth of reported cases. This is highly fragile data, as growth in reported cases is affected by how many people get tested. How many people get tested may be strongly dependent upon a governmental requirement for face mask use.
