This South Korean cohort study of 424444 people found that regular aspirin use was associated with a 9% decrease in all-cause mortality over the 5-year follow-up period. The beneficial effects were seen in the 40 - 60 year old age group only, whereas no benefit was seen in the over 60 year old group.

Comment: This study found that the benefit was due to a reduction in cancer deaths, not in mortality from cardiovascular disease. The authors do not speculate why the benefit was not seen in those over 60 years of age, only saying that the long-term use of aspirin in the elderly remains controversial.
