Antioxidant supplementation with pycnogenol was associated with an increased time to fatigue during exercise (increased exercise capacity). This supports the hypothesis that antioxidants can reduce oxidative stress induced suppression of aerobic respiration within the mitochondria, thereby the antioxidants may increase the efficiency of electron transfer and ATP production.
