This study in 1567 individuals (approx age in their 70s) found that high intensity exercise did not have a statistically significant mortality benefit over moderate intensity exercise over a 5 year period.

Comment: There was a trend suggesting a possible benefit of high intensity training, however, the comparison with the control group was complicated by the fact that the control group tended to occasionally engage in high intensity exercise voluntarily. The primary take-home is that exercise is good, and that there is a possible but not proven additional benefit from occasional high intensity training.
