This study found that the most common potentially inappropriately prescribed medication to patients 65 years of age and older was aspirin, and the most common potentially important omitted medication was a statin. Comment: This study is highly suspect given that the criteria for defining the inappropriate use of aspirin as being when aspirin was prescribed to patients over 65 years of age with no history of coronary, cerebral or peripheral arterial disease or occlusive arterial events. However, it is not inappropriate to prescribe these patients aspirin when its effect on cancer is considered. Some experts consider aspirin appropriate for primary prevention down to age 50.
