This meta-analysis found that patients participating in a high intensity exercise program were more likely to quit than those participating in a moderate intensity exercise program, when the duration of exercise was the same.

Comment: The theoretical benefit of high intensity programs is that they can be designed to take up less time. This study did find that patients dropped out of the high intensity exercise programs, when the exercise time was short, at a similar rate as patients participating in a moderate intensity but longer duration exercise program. So a short, high intensity workout was equal to a longer, moderate intensity workout in terms of dropout rate. However, if the exercise duration is constant, then patients are more likely to dropout of a high intensity program compared to a moderate intensity program. Makes sense.
