supplementation with chondroitin and glucosamine supplement was found in this cohort study to be associated with a 27% reduction in overall mortality during the approximately 15 year follow-up period.

Comment: Note that this study looked at the combination of chondroitin and glucosamine, so it is not able to say which one was better, or if the combination was better than the individual ingredients. Other studies have suggested that the primary benefit is from the anti-inflammatory effect of glucosamine. Note that other studies have shown that the combination supplement does not uniformly decrease joint pain, although that is how it is promoted. It may be that the primary benefit is not in pain reduction but rather in improving longevity.
