Nicotine replacement, bupropion, or varenicline approximately double the odds of success when attempting to stop smoking. Nicotine replacement is best when a long-acting nicotine patch is combined with a short acting product such as nicotine lozenges, gum, inhalers, or nasal sprays. It can be helpful to extend treatment beyond 12 weeks. Counseling, including telephone quit lines, also helps increase the quit rate.
