In this study of 505 patients with stage 3 kidney disease found that hydration with IV fluids prior to undergoing a CT scan with contrast was not better in terms of patient outcomes than not giving IV fluids prior to CT imaging with contrast.

Comment: Prehydration therapy has been a common practice, however, this study suggests that it is not of any benefit in the prevention of kidney damage. The authors conclude not giving prehydration therapy is safe and cost-effective.
