The 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the 7th occurrence since the first was reported in 1976. This outbreak has occurred simultaneously with a much larger outbreak of EBV in west Africa.

Comment: The authors of this article hypothesize several possibilities as to why the outbreak of EBV in DRC is much smaller than that in west Africa. Their leading hypotheses are: a) DRC is more remote, making person-to-person transmission of EBV much more difficult. b) the DRC has extensive previous experience with EBV outbreaks, and as a result has developed more rapid responses to outbreaks.
