An elevated preoperative BNP level was found to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk postoperatively after noncardiac surgery. If the BNP was over 100 to less than 200 pg/mL, the hazard ratio was 2.27. The hazard ratio increased to 5.82 for thos with a 1500 pg/mL or greater BNP level.

Comment: The next question: should we delay surgery in patients with an elevated BNP? In many cases for elective surgery, the answer probably is yes.
