In higher risk critically ill patients, gastric prophylaxis with proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers likely result in important reductions in gastrointestinal bleeding but increased risk of pneumonia. Overall, this review concluded that there was no important effect on in-hospital morbidity or mortality.
