This study looked at the attributable risks for developing pancreatic cancer, and found that 14% of pancreatic cancers were attributable to tobacco smoking, 13% to heavy alcohol drinking, 10% to diabetes, 12% to a low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and only 1% were attributable to a family history of pancreatic cancer.

Comment: This study strongly suggests that lifestyle, not genetics, is the primary attributable risk for pancreatic cancer. Not all cases of pancreatic cancer can be explained by these variables, however, meaning that in many cases pancreatic cancer is a random event with an unknown cause.
