This meta-analysis found that 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day for women and 2-4 per day for men was inversely associated with a 15% to 20% reduction in total mortality. A J-shaped relationship between alcohol intake and mortality was found in both men and women. This analysis looked at 34 studies including a total of over 1 million subjects and 95k deaths.

Comment: Whether or not mild alcohol intake decreases premature death remains unclear, however, this study suggests a possible benefit. What is clear is that binge drinking or daily intake in excess about 2 drinks a day is associated with increased health risks.
