Physicians responsible for teaching residents tend to use one of four different styles: a) DIRECT CARE in which minimal patient care responsibility is given to the resident; b) EMPOWERMENT encourages trainee progressive independence, and uses teaching and oversight is used to ensure quality of care; c) MIXED PRACTICE focuses on patient care first then teaching, and is adjusted gradually depending upon patient volumes and resident progress; and d) MINIMALIST style involves a high degree of trust in residents, and a high degree of patient care and teaching responsibility is delegated to senior residents. Comment: This article notes that the teaching physicians rarely discuss their teaching style with the residents, suggesting that communication of teaching style may improve resident education and experience.
