In patients taking blood pressure medications, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers appear to be beneficial in slowing memory decline in the elderly. These renin-angiotensin drugs cross the blood brain barrier. Nonpenetrant drugs such as calcium channel blockers and diuretics appear to help maintain attention span but not memory in the elderly.
