This study found that the combination of green tea and coffee consumption was associated with a decreased all-cause mortality in type 2 diabetics.

Comment: The effect of coffee has not been uniformly associated with decreased mortality in type 2 diabetics, likely because it can increase cardiovascular mortality in patients at increased cardiovascular risk. This study was done in a population that overall is at lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Japanese patients. Overall, there appears to be a benefit but caution is called for. In type 2 diabetics with cardiovascular disease, there may be no benefit or even harm. The beneficial effect of green tea deserves more investigation.
