This cohort study of 22 475 men & women in Italy found that over an average 8.2y follow-up, that those whose diet was high in ultra-processed foods had a higher overall mortality rate. The risk was about 25% higher in the highest consumption of ultra-processed foods quartile versus the lowest quartile.

Comment: Ultra-processed foods are industrial formulation foods. They include sugar sweetened beverages, packaged breads, cookies, many snacks, candy, ice cream, breakfast cereal, and pre-prepared frozen meals.
