Guaifenesin was found in this study to have no measurable effect on sputum volume or properties. The authors conclude that it is unlikely to be an expectorant or mucolytic when used to treat acute respiratory tract infections.

Comment: In other words, it is unlikely to be of any benefit at all in respiratory tract infections.
