Elderly Japanese men who do not engage in ongoing paid work appear to have a greater risk of developing a physical disability. Continuing to work may be an effective strategy for men to participate in social activities. Women do not appear to have the same benefit from engaging in paid work, possibly due to the difference of sex roles in conventional Japanese society.

Comment: Retirement may actually be harmful to people, in this study men in Japan. Ongoing social engagement appears to be the key. Changing professions, rather than retiring, may be a possible solution for many people to help them stay physically active and socially engaged as they age.
